3. Academic Programmes delivery in China

China has open education market to world. There is real enthusiasm for academic collaborations between Chinese and foreign academic institutions. There are 700 joint venture schools formally recognized in China. CED will explore the great opportunities in Chinese international education market.

3.1Chinese Government strategies

"Developing China through Education and Science" is one of the most important development strategies that have been highlighted repeatedly by the Chinese government in recent years. In March of 2003, Chinese government promulgated new regulations on foreign education providers. The regulations cover legal principles and other issues, with the goal of encouraging Sino-foreign cooperation in running higher education or vocational schools. One motivation for these regulations is probably the WTO requirement that member nations must admit foreign service providers¡ªfinancial institutions, insurance companies, and the like, including universities¡ªto enter one another¡¯s economy without excessive barriers. Under the new regulations, outsiders can offer programmes, mount exhibitions, give entrance examinations, conduct research, and create joint programs (Source: The regulations were announced in China Education Daily on 24 March 2003).

3.2 Academic collaboration

There is real enthusiasm for academic collaborations between Chinese and foreign academic institutions. The hope is that these new hybrid programs can enhance quality, raise standards to international level. There are 700 joint venture schools formally recognized in China. Exporting education instead of only providing courses and degrees within their own country - universities are increasingly looking to export their "brand" overseas, where there is demand for UK-endorsed university degrees. Nottingham's new campus has opened in Ningbo, China. The degrees will be awarded by Nottingham.
